Saint Francis of Assisi (1181/1182 – October 3, 1226) is one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church, known for his profound love of nature, his devotion to poverty, and his complete dedication to following Christ.
Born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone in Assisi, Italy, Francis was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant. As a young man, he lived a carefree life of luxury and dreamed of becoming a knight. However, after experiencing illness and contemplating God's call during prayer, he underwent a dramatic conversion.
In 1205, while praying in the dilapidated chapel of San Damiano, Francis heard Christ speak to him from the crucifix: "Francis, rebuild my church." Taking this literally at first, he began to repair the chapel. Later, he understood this as a call to reform the Church spiritually.
Francis renounced his wealth and inheritance, choosing to live in complete poverty. He wore a simple brown tunic, lived among the poor, cared for lepers, and preached the Gospel with joy and simplicity. His love for all of God's creation became legendary, as he called all creatures his brothers and sisters.
As followers gathered around him, Francis founded the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) in 1209, approved by Pope Innocent III. He also helped establish the Poor Clares with Saint Clare of Assisi and created a third order for lay people.
In 1224, while praying on Mount La Verna, Francis received the stigmata—the wounds of Christ—in his hands, feet, and side, making him the first recorded person to bear these marks. He died on October 3, 1226, and was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1228.
Saint Francis is the patron saint of animals, ecology, and Italy. His feast day is celebrated on October 4th. His famous prayer, "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace," continues to inspire millions. In 2013, Pope Francis chose his papal name in honor of this great saint.
Prayer of Saint Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
2025
Saint Francis of Assisi Chapel in Kulo was established in 2025, bringing the spirit of Franciscan love, simplicity, and devotion to our community. Like our patron saint who rebuilt churches and reformed hearts, our chapel stands as a beacon of faith and hope.
Our Mission
We strive to embody the values of Saint Francis—caring for the poor, protecting God's creation, living simply, and spreading the Gospel with joy. Our chapel welcomes all who seek to grow closer to Christ through prayer, community, and service.
Our Vision
As Saint Francis heard the call to "rebuild my church," we too commit ourselves to building up the Body of Christ. Our chapel serves as a spiritual home where believers can encounter God's mercy, celebrate the sacraments, and grow in holiness together.
"Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible."

CCC 956 - The Communion of Saints
"The intercession of the saints. Being more closely united to Christ, those who dwell in heaven fix the whole Church more firmly in holiness... they do not cease to intercede with the Father for us, as they proffer the merits which they acquired on earth through the one mediator between God and men, Christ Jesus... So by their fraternal concern is our weakness greatly helped."
CCC 2683 - The Witnesses of Prayer
"The witnesses who have preceded us into the kingdom, especially those whom the Church recognizes as saints, share in the living tradition of prayer by the example of their lives, the transmission of their writings, and their prayer today. They contemplate God, praise him and constantly care for those whom they have left on earth... Their intercession is their most exalted service to God's plan. We can and should ask them to intercede for us and for the whole world."
We honor Saint Francis of Assisi not to worship him, but to celebrate God's grace working through him. He shows us that holiness is possible, that radical love for Christ can transform our lives, and that the path of humility and service leads to true joy. Through his intercession, we ask God to help us become better disciples of Jesus Christ.
Biblical foundations for honoring the saints and living faithfully
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith."
Hebrews 12:1-2
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."
Matthew 5:3, 5, 7-9
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Matthew 6:19-21
